Jungle, Desert or Crisis Region: CIWI Serves Remote Areas With Satellite-Based Internet Connectivity
Ulm's CIWI GmbH rounds off their portfolio of services for non-profit organisations
Global networking in the remotest areas on the planet: The IT-specialists of CIWI have already connected twelve non-government organisations (NGOs) to the World Wide Web and have now decided to integrated the new service into their portfolio. The CIWI technicians bring Internet connectivity to the most remote places by installing satellite dishes - no matter if in Congo or in Kabul.
„Communication is vital for organisations of this kind,“ explains Merckens. Since the initial installation the solution has proven its worth: additional antennas have in the meantime been installed also in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, Afghanistan and in the Congo. This year still installations in Morocco, Cambodia, Mozambique, Indonesia, Thailand and in Mongolia will follow.
Already in early 2005 CIWI had been approached by numerous African NGOs to consider linking them up to the Internet. Most of these organisations have been set up in extremely remote regions without technical infrastructure. After the successful first installation at CRAFOD in Kimpese CIWI went on to train Congolese technicians on location in the fields of setup, maintenance and repair of the satellite installations. This successful model was developed on a new and advanced level when CIWI entered into a preferred partnership with the Luxembourg enterprise Satlynx, a worldwide provider of satellite communication technology.
In 2006 CIWI was contracted by the international Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation to develop a concept for hooking up all of their international offices to the Internet through satellite uplinks. The project was successfully completed in 2007.

Setting up a satellite dish in rural Congo
The idea for this new area of business was born out of the dire need of the Congolese aid organisation CRAFOD located deep in the Congo's rural hinterland in the small town Kimpese: back then CIWI was working in the centre for regional development support and training and was busy with the implementation of a web-based financial project management software Fundtrac. CIWI has created this software package specifically to meet the needs of international NGOs. „In the course of this work we were approached by senior managers from Kimpese telling us about the manifold disadvantages their aid programmes - particularly in the education sector - suffer from because of the lack of Internet connectivity“, remembers Klaus Merckens, Managing Director of CIWI. CIWI began to look for a solution - since summer 2005 CRAFOD's training centre has now been supplied with 24/7 internet connectivity. „Communication is vital for organisations of this kind,“ explains Merckens. Since the initial installation the solution has proven its worth: additional antennas have in the meantime been installed also in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, Afghanistan and in the Congo.
