UN Global Compact: CIWI GmbH Supports Transparency Initiative of the United Nations

Since 1999 the UN Global Compact has been working for spreading the word about the importance of good governance in business, more transparency, and less corruption. The global grouping of enterprises created by former Secretary General Kofi Annan brings together firms and potential partners and helps in bringing public acknowledgement to positive achievements. Since July 2009 the CIWI GmbH has joined the ranks of the Global Compact as one of only 4 enterprises from the computer and software fields based in Southern Germany.

As a firm specialised in international finance and technology products and services CIWI thus takes a firm position for good governance in the enterprise and in development cooperation. Only 10 ICT-based businesses have decided to support the UN Global Compact so far in the whole of Germany.

The UN Global Compact aims to motivate entrepreneurs to engage themselves for the realisation of 10 global targets generally related to responsible business practice and good citizenship. Through its work with globally acting institutions and organisations the issues of transparency and accountability as well as the fight against corruption is of great importance to CIWI. The firm supports the optimal management of donations before and after they are spent through its products and services. It provides solutions that allow sound, secure, and flexibal financial management of funds even in difficult situations of crisis intervention or general humanitarian aid.

Traceability of funds is not only important where donations are collected. It is also of the utmost relevance for ensuring the quality of development aid in the place where they are spent. Transparency throughout the entire life cycle of funds strengthens the trust of donors and improves the efficiency of aid organisations.

CIWI GmbH provides the ideal tools for tackling these challenges:  Fundtrac® 2.8, the financial project management tool for the social economy, visualises the flow of funds and makes it easy to create complex reports that show all projects they were invested in. Technologies like client/server networks or VSAT-based satellite stations that enable internet connectivity in even the most remote places lay the groundwork for high service reliability, strong data security, and dependable evaluation.

Its membership reflects CIWI's strong commitment for binding global regulations in the field. While some institutions like the German Central Institute for Social Studies (DZI) have already begun awarding labels and accredit foundations' good management practice there are virtually no globally dependable guidelines. CIWI GmbH thus welcomes the UN Global Compact as an important step in the right direction.

The UN Global Compact is a strategic policy initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. By doing so, business, as a primary agent driving globalization, can help ensure that markets, commerce, technology and finance advance in ways that benefit economies and societies everywhere. The UN Global Compact is the largest corporate citizenship and sustainability initiative in the world with over 5200 corporate participants and stakeholders from over 130 countries. The German Global Compact Network is comprised of 147 members and has been established as an important platform for dialogue about the relevance of corporate social responsibility today.
